Albert's father was employed by Lever Brothers as a Marine Engineer. Albert was granted a scholarship by Lever Brothers to finish his schooling at Birkenhead Institute where he excelled in chemistry. He also won a certificate for music at the University of London. He was a member of St Andrew's Church, Lower Bebington, Cheshire and was a member of the Oddfellows Society. Albert is commemorated on the Port Sunlight Village Memorial, the Birkenhead Institute Memorial (the plaque is now located in Birkenhead Central Library since the school closed in 1994), St Andrew's Church, Lower Bebington and also, on the headstone of the grave of his parents in St Barnabas Parish Church, Bromborough.
