The Battalion War Diary records: “Festubert May 30 More shelling – especially during the afternoon. Since 26th May 25,000 sandbags have been filled and used for the breastworks – the majority in J6, J7. The last supplies of sandbags see, to have been very white. Had they been more varied in colour the top of the parapet would not have been so apparent. New trench started two nights previously – running north from between J6.J4 towards the Canadians was finished being cut. Men greatly handicapped by the amount of water which was reached at 2’ 6” level. Other ranks killed 2. Wounded 4.”
