Private 10841 James Bridges of the Somerset Light Infantry was reported to have been killed in France on 1 July 1916 in the great British offensive. He was the son of Mr and Mrs William Bridges of Hobbs Wall and a nephew of Private Mark Bridges of High Littleton (formerly of Farmborough) who was killed in action in Belgium a few days earlier on White Sunday. James, who was 20 years of age, enlisted in 1914 soon after the outbreak of war. He later went to France where he was wounded in action in September 1915 and returned to England where he sufficiently recovered from his wounds and was drafted back to France on a date in early 1916. "James was formerly a coalminer and a well known and respected villager. His memorial is on the Pier and Face 2A of the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme" Submitted by Mr Patrick Bridges of Farmborough, Bath
