Although John Francis Allen was baptised in that name, his mother married John Smith in the quarter following his birth.This was so soon after the birth, it is reasonable to consider John Smith his father. It is understandable that they would not want to give a census enumerator a different surname for their son, so John Francis is recorded as Smith in some records.
