Circumstances around Gregory's death

On 20 July 1916, the 20th Battalion took part in the attack on High Wood and suffered significant losses during fierce hand-to-hand fighting. Going into action in the early hours, the Fusiliers helped clear the south-eastern area of the wood but had sustained 390 casualties by the time they were withdrawn from the frontline at midnight.
