Following his mother's death

known 1899

Charles Buckley was 4 years old when the 1891 census was taken. The family lived at 25 Leeming Street. ’Charley’ as he was called on the census, Mary aged 9 and John aged 6 were scholars. Thomas was 17 years old and was working as a piecer in a cotton mill. Leeming Street was the bottom end of what is now Manchester Road, in the centre of Preston. Their mother Jane died in 1899 aged 49. Charles went to live with his brother Thomas, who had married Martha Bannister on 25 December 1894 at Emmanuel Church Preston. They lived at 13 Darwen Street Preston. In 1901, 13 year old Charles Buckley was working as a creeler in a cotton mill, winding thread onto bobbins. His brother Thomas was a cotton spinner, and he and Martha had a son John. Also living with them was Charles’ younger sister Susannah. The same census shows that their sister Mary was a boarder at 29 Gilbert Street Preston with Thomas and Jane Mellor, who had a servant and had taken in another boarder, Mary Yates and her 1 year old son. Mary Buckley worked as a cardroom hand in a cotton mill. The Bowling family lived at number 26 Gilbert Street. 21 year old George Higgins Bowling was a cotton spinner. In 1903, Mary and George married at St Mary’s Church. In 1911 they lived at 30 Gilbert Street, and later settled at number 29.
