known 2nd November 1917
The metal headstone is unusual as, apparently, it bears no name although it does include the badges of the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Navy. It reads: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF TWO SONS KILLED IN THE GREAT WAR ONE LIES HERE ONE IN JUTLAND BAY GOD BLESS THEIR WORK WHO LOVED ME AND GAVE HIMSELF FOR ME. The two sons mentioned are Captain Henry Hall Griffith (RFC) and Midshipman William Llewelyn Griffith (RN). The grave can be verified as that of Captain Griffith as the CWGC site confirms the burial location in St John the Evangelist churchyard and has a copy of the ‘Headstone Schedule’ that quotes the inscription and his parents known address. Henry’s brother Midshipman William Llewelyn Griffith, was killed in action when HMS Indefatigable was sunk on 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. He is also commemorated on the Lives of the First World War site.
