He proceeded to Singapore to take up an appointment, first, as Medical Superintendent of the Hospital for infectious diseases, later in the Public Health Department, and was working there when war broke out. Legge joined the Singapore Volunteer Corps as Lieutenant in July 1914 and was mobilized for garrison duty in August. He met his death in the quelling of a riot occasioned by the mutiny of a part of the 5th Light Infantry, an Indian regiment. With his stretcher-bearers, he was following up the firing line, but in the darkness and the thick bush some of the mutineers got behind them, and Angus was shot from behind." He died the same day, 16 February 1915.
