Mr M.J.Murphy, the MP for East Waterford, wrote the first of a number of letters to the army on behalf of Sarah, Michael's widow, who was left with four young children to bring up. His headed note paper was from the Grand Hotel Tramore. After the usual administrative delay, Sarah Griffin was finally awarded a pension of 22/6 a week on 16th August 1915.
