The family member who has researched the life of his Uncle John Newbrook discovered how he had died through a newspaper article posted at the time of his death in 1916. The article revealed that Trooper Newbrook's commanding officer Captain Hamilton Salter had written to John's mother to explain how he had died stating that he had been buried alive with three of his comrades (who lie beside him in the Military Cemetery) when a trench had collapsed when a shell exploded. By the time that they were dug out all of the men were dead.
