Born 19th August 1881 in Spennymoor, County Durham. He was Private 17868 in 14th Bn., DLI On Sunday 19th December 1915 his unit was attacked with gas and high explosives near the Wieltje. 'A' Company had to wear gas helmets for 3 hours and 'D' Company, on lower ground, for 4 hours. Casualties amounted to 149 with many deaths (22) attributed to defective masks. He is buried in POTIJZE BURIAL GROUND CEMETERY Leper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Grave reference number V.19 He is remembered on the Mainsforth Colliery and also on Ferryhill War Memorial, where he is wrongly remembered as GOUGH C
