St Andrews Citizen

15th June 1918

Sergeant Walter Ward, H.L.I, St Andrews, has been missing in France since 25th March. He was in action on that date, and was wounded in the left forearm. Mrs Ward has made several inquiries about her husband, and has been informed by both the War Office and the Red Cross that he was wounded, but they have been unable to find out what became of him after that. A member of Sergeant Ward’s company, however, has written Mrs Ward to tell her that her husband was last seen on the way to a casualty clearing station, and that his condition then did not appear to be very serious. The clearing station fell into the hands of the enemy, and all the wounded men who were able to walk were marched off as prisoners. It is therefore probable that Sergt. Ward is in a German hospital and has not had the opportunity of communicating with home. It is not known, however, that he reached the casualty clearing station, and the lack of this information adds to the difficulty of tracing him. Sergt. Ward joined the Army about two years ago, and has had quite successful career there. He was one of the original members of the St Andrews Volunteer Training Corps. A talented musical entertainer he was a great favourite with St Andrews audienoes, and since he joined the Colours he has done much to brighten the leisure hours of his fellow soldiers. He was butcher with Mr Hendry, South Street
