Birkenhead Institute Whetstone Lane Roll of Honour 1914-1919

'TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF OLD BOYS OF THIS SCHOOL WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1919' The names of the Fallen are followed by "These all died in faith...God is not ashamed to be called their God. He hath prepared for them a city." -Quotations from the Memorial Plaque that once graced the entrance hall of the School in Whetstone Lane. The Plaque was presented by Mr Solly and unveiled in March 1920 by Major-General Sir Reginald Barnes, K.C.B. The school building in Whetstone Lane was demolished in 1970. 'Birkenhead Institute' opened in 1889 and was originally and for many years a private boys school, with a reputation for standards and excellence. On the 22nd May 1908 due to changes brought to bear by The Education Act of 1902, the school passed from private ownership into the hands of the Birkenhead corporation. Later on it became a council grammar school which closed in 1970 and boys were then sent to 'Tollemache Road School' a council comprehensive with the reputation as the roughest school in Birkenhead, which then changed it's name to 'Birkenhead Institute High School'. This too the council later sold and was demolished to make way for a housing estate 'Wilfred Owen Drive' in the early 90s...even though Wilfred Owen did not attend nor have any connection to the comprehensive school that once stood on that site. When 'Birkenhead Institute' Whetstone Lane ceased to be a private boys school of repute, boys were then sent to 'Birkenhead School', Beresford Road to be privately educated. (There are 83 names on the memorial).-When the School was demolished the brass Memorial Plaque was transferred to Birkenhead Central Library, Borough Road along with the Memorial Book, where it remains on permanent public display.
