HMS OAK was a fast Destroyer, nominally of the Acheron-class, but constructed by Sir Alfred Yarrow as a 'Builders Special' with enhanced propulsion, and capable of more than 32 knots. HMS Oak was employed as a tender to the Flagship of the Grand Fleet and therefore came under the direct tasking of the Commander in Chief. Her duties prior to Jutland included ferrying VIPs from Thurso to the Fleet anchorage at Scapa Flow. During the initial Grand Fleet engagement at Jutland, Oak was stationed on the disengaged side of battleship line, initially at 2000 yards, but opening to greater separation as enemy shells went over their targets and became uncomfortably close. Subsequently she remained close to Iron Duke, observing a close torpedo pass, but suffering no damage or casualties. Lt Cdr Douglas Faviell MVO commanded HMS Oak throughout the entire war.
