Rawcliffe Parish Church Roll of Honour

Rawcliffe Parish Church Roll of Honour

A list naming the 340 "Parishioners who served in HM Forces during the Great War 1914-19" that still hangs in the Parish Church today. The first 12 names listed are those of ladies from the community. The Parish covers the villages of Rawcliffe and Rawcliffe Bridge near Goole in East Yorkshire. They lie south of the River Aire and north of the Aire and Calder canal. The major employer in the community at that time was the Joseph Turner Paper Mill. 55 of those named are marked as having lost their life and are commemorated on the War Memorial between the villages. For an in-depth understanding of the impact of War on the Parish a book, published in 2018 by Robert Barker, a resident of Rawcliffe, entitled "Though Lost to Sight to Memory Dear. Rawcliffe: One Parish and its People at the Time of War" is strongly recommended.
