Ormskirk War Memorial

Ormskirk War Memorial

Ormskirk's main war memorial used to be at the front of the Comrades of the Great War Club in Southport Road, Ormskirk. When the club closed and the land sold for housing, the memorial was moved to a site in Coronation Park, Park Road, Ormskirk and was re-dedicated on 28 October 2012. The original monument had no names on it but the club had a scroll which had been prepared in about 1920. Following consultation and research by local people, West Lancashire Borough Council erected new stone plaques adjacent to the memorial with the names of about 340 local men who died during the First World War. This community endeavours to include the lifestories of all the names listed on the plaques. Unfortunately, there remains a small number who cannot be identified, either because there are several men listed by CWGC with the same name and no way of seeing which one has an Ormskirk connection, or, in a very few cases, no casualty with that name can be found in CWGC records. http://www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/60890 There are sixteen CWGC burials in the Churchyard of Ormskirk Parish Church but only seven of those are listed on the Ormskirk War Memorial. The nine names that are missing are: 31217 William Birch 3 KLR, 330042 Bowden Farnham 9 KLR, 330051 George Henry Lea 9 KLR, R4/089753 Joseph Lee ASC, 36517 James Ormesher 15 KLR, 205829 John Pears Rifle Brigade, 6184 George Henry Sharpe Leics Rgt, M2/114834 William Stevenson ASC, RX4/263577 Charles Mills Wilson ASC
