To the Men of the 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, who lost their lives defending Hesbecourt on the 21st/22nd March 1918. The profiles of Pte Thomas Hinch, Pte George Victor Hope (enlisted in the 3/1st Sussex Yeomanry) and Capt. H. Saxon explain what took place over those two days and include the 9th.Batt. War Diaries and the Diary of Lt.Col. Hill, R.S.R. Also included are the profiles of Capt. H.Saxon, who was taken prisoner, Capt. A.V.Rewell, who was injured during the German advance and Pte. A.Balchin, who was reported 'Killed in Action', but was, in fact, injured and survived the War. Also included are the profiles of Capt. S.F.Collier, the Manchester Regt., who helped defend the Royal Sussex lines, but was subsequently Killed. The bodies of Pte. A.Lang, the Manchester Regt. and Pte. A.Vaughan, the Warwickshire Regt. are buried alongside Pte. F.W.Cole of the Royal Sussex Regt. (enlisted in the 3/1st Sussex Yeomanry), in the Hesbecourt Communal Cemetery. Pte. G.V.Hope, the Royal Sussex Regt., although recorded as being 'Killed in Action' was, in fact, severely injured and carried by the German Army to Hattencourt, where he died 10 days later. After the Armistice, his body was reburied in the Roye New British Cemetery. Also, after the Armistice, the bodies of 2nd.Lt. E.C.Regan, Pte. A.S.Turner, Pte.P.E.Homewood, Pte. F.E.Nicholls and L/Cpl. R.H.Cosstick were recovered and reburied at Jeancourt Communal Cemetery Extension - in all, there are only 7 known graves for the 9th Battalion for this period of the War, no other bodies were ever recovered and their names are remembered on the Pozieres Memorial Plaques. The Pozieres Memorial records the names of 59 men of the 9th Battalion who were killed during March and early April 1918. The 9th Battalion War Diaries for March 1918 record that there were 402 casualties for the month, including Prisoners of War. The CWGC Website shows 913 recorded deaths for the 9th Battalion.
