  • My dream for years to come
    'This particular cartoon is the artist's true personal nightmare. Profoundly disturbed by the horror of war he undoubtedly experienced what was euphemistically known as 'shell shock'. His first leave in April 1915, after 6 months in the trenches, was extended after a medical examination. The War seemed to alter his whole personality permanently - from mischievous prankster to the shy, solitary character he remained up to his lonely death in 1959'. From a collection of his cartoons compiled & edited by Tonie & Valmai Holt in 1983.
