  • Lieut. Noel Felix Perris (1894-1918)
    Perris served in the Royal Fusiliers at Gallipoli and on the Somme before transferring to the RFC in 1916. He was killed in a collision over Detling on the night of 20 July 1918 in pursuit of Gotha bombers, while serving in 143 Squadron.

  • Lieut. Noel Felix Perris (1894-1918) with sister
    Perris is shown at home in Streathbourne Road, Tooting with one of his two sisters (Sylvia or Katharine). Perris was promoted to Lieutenant in the RAF on June 1st 1918. He was killed on the night of July 20th 1918.

  • Lieut. Perris with wounded arm 1916
    Perris had been promoted 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd London Regiment in June 1915. He was wounded at Hebuterne on the Somme, and transferred to the RFC late in 1916.

  • Lieut Perris ready for flight c1918
    Perris served with 143 (Home Defence) Squadron, based at Detling, Kent, which flew SE5a's from March 1918. He was killed in a collision with another aircraft, piloted by 2nd Lieut Thomas Wright, on the night of 20th July 1918 and is buried at Detling.

  • Perris and his father, G.H. Perris c.1917
    Perris gained his 'wings' in early 1917 and joined his first squadron in May of that year. His father, George Herbert Perris (1866-1920), was a war correspondent and author: see Robert Gomme, 'George Herbert Perris 1866-1920. The Life and Times of a Radical' (Peter Lang, Bern 2003).

  • 2nd Lieut Noel Perris with his sister Sylvia c.191
    Perris was still a 2nd Lieutenant in the 2nd London Regiment (commissioned in June 1915) when this photograph was taken. He was killed a few days before Sylvia's twentieth birthday, and had planned to take the day as leave in order to take his family out to lunch. His two sisters and mother duly awaited him. Instead, a telegram arrived, announcing his death.

  • Perris's grave at Detling, Kent
    Perris was stationed at RAF Detling when he was killed flying at night. he Imperial War Graves Commission headstone bears an inscription from Chaucer's 'Caterbury Tales': "He was a verray parfit gentil knight'. Detling lies on the Pilgrims' Way. Perris's father's ashes were scattered on his grave two years later.
