A community made up of those with connections to, or local to, the former Borough of Rawtenstall who are known to have perished at sea during the Great War or survived a hostile encounter at sea. NOTES: 1. Although not "Lost at Sea" during the War John Henry Kay has been included here as his life and death, after medical discharge from the Army in 1917, is closely linked to war service at sea from this date. 2. Walter Medlock, Cecil Kershaw, Esaw Hart and Vernon Stewart were all "Sunk and Survived" 3. Harry Fenton and Albert Hanson "Died at Sea" in accidents not directly related to enemy action. 4. William McCormick, Alfred Knowles and Andrew Daw were lost with HMT ROYAL EDWARD and Percy Law and John Mulloy with HMS HAWKE. 5. Whilst returning from the USA, Robert Hebden (at that time a civilian) survived the sinking of the RMS LUSITANIA on 7 May 1915, but his wife, Clara, lost her life.
